Whether you are advertising a business, promoting a service or looking to display significance of the building you reside in, the sign you display should be attractive as well as useful. When trying to decide exactly what you need in your sign, try to remember a few key things when designing it that will help you meet your needs in an eye pleasing way.

Building signs, especially in an area rich with historical structures, should look as if they belong and not out of place. While you want to appeal to the motorists driving past your place of business or historical home, you do not want the sign to be so blaring that people who are walking by are not attracted to it as well. The colors you use, the shape of the sign and the graphics placed upon it are all important components that must be considered. If you are working with a historical building, make sure that you do not have to follow certain guidelines in your building sign presentation. If you do, try your best to adhere to what is asked to not only promote your business or home, but make it look as if the sign comes from the same time period.

The placement of your building sign is also very important. You want people to be able to clearly see it. For example, if your place is business has a storefront, advertise by using the front window and applying lettering to it announcing who and what you are. Another option would be to hang a sign above the entrance of you business. This method once again attracts both the drivers and the walkers. You want your sign to be the right size.

The biggest consideration in placing a sign that advertises your wares, services, or reason your home is special is the final design you use. Once again, if this is for a historical area, double check to see if there are specific requirements you must follow. Otherwise, if you have your own logo, use that graphic in conjunction with appropriate lettering in the right font and style. Make sure it is easy to read and conveys what you are in the least amount of words. For example, ‘Bob’s Pharmacy’ printed with an appropriate logo, and easy to read font with a phone number in slightly smaller letters tells people exactly what you are without being excessive. When it comes to signs, less is more. If your building is a certain color, try to find a complimenting background for your graphic and lettering to make it more appealing.

Contact local sign shops in your area and talk to a professional sign maker. They will be able to take your graphic and lettering and show you a variety of options to find the best one for you. They will be able to recommend color combinations, font style and type, and can also do window lettering if that is your preference. Prices for these signs vary, but by using a professional shop, you will get the best and most appealing looking sign for you money.
