Similarly any computer that manages printers can be called a print server. A computer which is responsible for managing network traffic will be called a network server. Any computer system that is responsible for processing database queries is a database server.

Generally speaking a server will not perform any other task which is besides its server task. For this reason one can say that they are dedicated to a particular task. Nevertheless at times a single computer may actually execute multiple programmes simultaneously; this is the case with multiprocessing operating systems. In such cases the word server may not apply to the computer but instead it will apply to that programme which is managing the resources.

Different Kinds of Servers

Servers can be of many types. For example:

Server Platforms: It is a term that is almost synonymous with operating systems. In this case the engine which drives the server may be the system’s underlying hardware or software. Hence we have the term server platform.

Application Servers: The application servers connect the end users and the database servers. At times they are also referred to as middleware. In themselves, the application servers occupy a large tract of territory in the computing industry.

Audio or Video Servers: These servers make it possible to bring forth the multimedia capabilities to the internet. The audio and visual servers are responsible for the websites capability in broadcasting streaming multimedia contents.

Chat Servers: Chat servers are what enable a massive number of their users to exchange information. This is environmentally similar to the internet newsgroups. They make it possible to have real time discussions.

Fax Servers: Any set up that requires faxing actual documents but wishes to reduce the outgoing and incoming telephone traffic will find an appropriate solution in the form of a fax server.

FTP Servers: This is perhaps amongst the oldest of all internet services. FTP or the file transfer protocol is responsible for the movement of one or more files in a secure manner. All the while it provides for the security of the file, its organisation and also the transfer control.

Groupware Servers: A groupware server is software. It is designed to help its users in being able to collaborate with each other, irrespective of their location. This can be done via the internet. It can also be done to work in a virtual environment by using intranet in an office place.

IRC Servers: They provide their users with the opportunity to have real time discussion capabilities. The internet relay chat is a combination of numerous different networks of servers which permit contact amongst their users by using an IRC network.

List Servers: List servers enable a method of better management of lists. These lists can be the open to public, interactive discussions, or they can be one way lists. The one way lists may be newsletters or announcements or pieces of advertisements.

Mail Servers: These are almost as common as the web servers themselves. They help in the movement and storage of mail over various corporate networks and also across the internet itself.

News Servers: There are many thousands of public news groups that are currently accessible from the USENET news network. The news servers are responsible for both the distribution as well as the delivery of communication amongst them.

Proxy Servers: The proxy servers are in betweens amongst the client programme and its external server. They help in the filtering of various requests amongst the servers. They are also responsible for improved performance and shared connections.
Telnet Servers: This server helps its users to log on to a given host computer and perform all functions in a manner that is similar to or same as working on the remote computer directly.

Web Servers: A web server provides static content to a given web browser. This is managed by loading a chosen file from a given disk and then serving it to the web browser of the user.

RAID

RAID is the short form used for redundant array of independent drives or disks. It is a term which is used for computer data storage schemes. These schemes either divide or multiply data amongst several hard drives. It can help in improved data reliability and better input and output performance.
