It is impossible to find an equivalent of our ubiquitous and omnipresent computer anywhere in human history. As an invention or discovery it is bound to have a position right at top along with wheel and fire because like those two, invention of computers have also brought about a paradigm change in our lives. Though computers are only about half a century old, but even within this short span of time they have invaded each and every nook of our life. And this has happened not only in our professional but in our personal lives as well. But one major problem that we are facing today is to program a single computer to perform all tasks that is expected of it. This does not mean that a computer is incapable of performing certain tasks. What instead is meant over here is that it might become difficult for a single computer to perform many different tasks. Reason behind this is that a computer needs software to program or instruct it or to translate instructions by its users regarding how to accomplish a task. Now for accomplishing many tasks, several softwares will be needed by that computer. This might create a problem. But this is exactly where application packaging steps in to help us out.
Application packaging itself, contrary to popular belief, is not software. Instead it can be looked upon as or termed as a manager of softwares. A little more lucid discussion is required to clarify this point. We all know and it has been mentioned before also that computers can perform all kinds or types of tasks that are assigned to them. But what is important for us to understand that computers require artificial intelligence to accomplish tasks. And it is softwares that are installed within them that act as source of their artificial intelligence. One problem that now emerges that all software are not compatible with each other. So for instance if a user loads particular software for viewing pictures and another for viewing movies, it might happen that these two softwares are found to be incompatible. In such a situation neither of them will function and smooth functioning of computer will be impaired. So it would be better if somebody creates a whole group of essential softwares keeping in mind not only factor of compatibility but also which softwares are essential for that particular computer. For example a computer used by a child will not require sophisticated software for drawing architectural drawings. And this is exactly what computer scientists are now doing everywhere and this creation of compatible groups of essential softwares is known as application packaging.
Application packaging is a very difficult job in itself. Scientists working on it not only have to create necessary groups of softwares but they have to conduct proper and adequate testing on it as well to ensure that product which reaches end user is perfect. And once scientists are able to ensure it then it becomes much easier for users of computers to handle their computers and make them do tasks according to user’s wishes without any glitches.
