More ways to save without feeling bad

Saving is something that should not make you feel bad. If you try to save and you feel deprived, then you might not be doing the right thing. One way to help you feel better about saving is to take things slowly and to start with a goal. Knowing what awaits you at the end of your “journey” is always a good way to motivate you. If you have a family, then try to involve everyone in saving. Have a family meeting and have everyone sit down and discuss your plan. In setting a goal, get everyone’s input as well. You would have to make some choices and decisions along the way – some of them may be difficult. In this thing, as in many others, you have to be a family and decide as one.
Talking about family – if you have children, you know how difficult it is to say no to them. The same thing can apply to your partner. I know I have spent way much more than I wanted to simply because I couldn’t say no to my partner. The thing to remember here, is that you can say no. This is perhaps one of the situations which can make you feel the worst – saying no to someone you love. But let me go back to the first point – in planning to save, engage the help of your family members.
More than your family members, though, you might want to make the effort with a support group. I think it always helps if you have other people engaging in the same activity or endeavor that you are. At work, for example, you could get colleagues who are likeminded to come up with a savings plan with you. You could even make it a fun thing – hold mini contests and the like. Having other people in on your saving plan creates accountability. Being accountable to someone other than yourself will make things a lot easier for you, trust me.
Another way to make saving easier on yourself is to make it automatic. You most likely receive your pay in a bank account, right? Make arrangements with your bank so that you can set aside a portion of your pay each time it arrives. Decide on an amount that you can afford to save. It does not have to be a big amount – a little can go a long way, especially over the long run. Have the bank divert this amount to a savings account which you cannot touch for a certain period of time.
Last, bask in the memory of good times spent because of your savings. Think of the vacations that you were able to take because you saved for them. Think of the credit card bill that did not keep you in debt for a year. Think of the nights that you slept soundly because you did not have to worry about debt. Think of the times when you faced a financial emergency and you had money to deal with it because you had money set aside.
