The History Of Hd TV - How It Started
Many of us think that HD Tv has only just been invented with the advent of the digital age. However the first attempts to set an HD TV standard started in the late 1970's and was mainly for the movie industry as they wanted to improve the quality of the films they produced. The first attempts were by Sony and NHK who produced a picture with the quality normally only seen in 35mm film. This was a huge step forward and would set a revolution in the movie industry.
Back In The 80's
In the late 1980's television broadcasters has realised that they needed to be involved in this technology and be able to deliver HD pictures to subscribers homes. In 1987 the Federal Communications Commission was asked to reserve a piece of the broadcasting spectrum for this new broadcasting method. However the four networks who were competing in the rush to use the new technology couldn't agree on a system and produced four different ideas. This led to a stalemate and a few years of inaction. Therefore in 1993 the FCC decided that the four networks would have to join together and reach a uniform standard. The new standard led to the formation of the Advanced Televisions Systems Committee which was approved and ready for business in 1996. This was a welcome relief to many industry insiders who were eager to begin testing the new signals.
Remember Dale Chihuly?
Some of you may have seen or remember the first HD TV broadcast about Dale Chihuly and his glass blowing tricks. PBS ran the program and had therefore become the first network to broadcast in true HD. This was a success and saw the other networks fighting hard to get onto the bandwagon as soon as possible and not get left behind.
By late 1998 there were now 7 TV networks broadcasting over the air HD TV. They were soon followed by others and even now more and more HD TV networks are springing up, all desperate not to be left behind.
Into 2003
In the early part of 2003 the FCC required that all broadcasters had digital signals enabled, and by 2006 they all had to be using these for over the air broadcasts. The situation is different however for cable and satellite broadcasters. The amount of bandwidth consumed by transmitting in HD TV is vast and it's not always possible to squeeze all this technology into a cable or satellite signal. Therefore the FCC granted these providers the option to choose a full HD TV signal if possible or to still use an old analogue signal. In time it is seen that nobody will be using an analogue signal at all as compression techniques and bandwidth restrictions are improved.
Conclusion
One of the main reason for the introduction for HD TV was us! Thats right..Us!. As we sat in movie theaters the movie moguls realised that those closest to the screen, especially with the wide screen format would be completely immersed in the movie. Those further back would not feel the same. Therefore they decided that with the advent of giant home TV screens which constantly looked washed out, they would try and bring those dramatic movie moments into our living rooms in stunning quality.
