Divorce Myths

Let us take the case of divorce and the UK. It has been noticed over a few decades now that the rate of divorce in the country is on the rise. This has affected our economy, social structure, demography, religion and politics. Business policies and commercial approaches have been altered and swayed by the fact that more than a third of the British couples have parted ways with each other every year. Built around these facts, a lot of myths have come to be propagated as well. In the following paragraphs, we shall be dealing with the veracity of three such assumptions.
Unfaithful Husbands
Do men cheat their wives more often? The general assumption is that the men of this country are more prone to infidelity than women. Though this is not true in the case of each and every divorce filed on the grounds of infidelity, unfortunately, this assumption is indeed based on concrete facts. Over 75% of the cases that cite cheating as the reason for divorce are filed by women. It has also been noted that the propensity for an older male to have an affair with a younger female out of wedlock has been sharply on the rise. Even the most tolerant and loving wife may not be forgiving if she discovers that her husband has been cheating her for the sake of his gorgeous young secretary.
Why
Why are men unfaithful to their wives? The reasons are many and varied, but some of the most common ones are being mentioned below:
Mid-life crisis is responsible for many marriages falling apart. It is not easy to build a career in the UK. Many men who spend their youth in fighting to get to the top of the corporate world are very tired by the time they are in their mid forties. The affair is merely a fling, and usually does not mature into a long-lasting relation.
There are marriages that are anyway dead, and an affair often comes as a relief for both parties. It may be noted here that most of the cases of extramarital affairs are not contested, and this is not always due to a lack of money. Sometimes, both parties are happy to part, they only needed a reason.
Cupid is still around, and yes, love does happen. There are many men who meet their old flames again, or fall for the proverbial beautiful stranger, and then leave the family for the sake of their true love.
Workplace romances are blooming as working hours and work cultures change all over the world. Men have to travel more for work now, and so do women. A man may fall in love while travelling, or he may have an affair because his wife is always away.
Regretful Ex Wives
Do women cherish marriage more than men, do not want a divorce, and deeply regret it if they undergo one? The answer to this cannot be as straightforward as the former query. The surveys have revealed that most men and women are hit economically by divorce, and their careers suffer. These two factors alone are enough to make anyone regret their divorce irrespective of gender or fondness for their former partners.
Why
The question is: why is this myth making the rounds then?
Women have been traditionally looked upon as home-makers, so it was assumed that they would deeply regret it if their marriage broke up.
Men are expected to be more stoic in general, and get over a divorce faster.
Child custody usually lands on the woman, so it is assumed that she will regret not having a male partner around.
However, all of these factors are variable in the present society.
Mothers are More Loving
Do mothers love their children more and take better care of them? The first part of the question is doubtable, but women have been doing better as parents. Over 90% of the single parents in the UK are mothers, and most of them are divorcees with custody rights. But this does not prove that men do not love their children as much as women. It is a biased judgment based on the fact that the women happen to be better child managers. But there are many heart-broken fathers in the country who still travel miles to see their children on the visitation days.
