The overall increase in the number of people cheating on their partner and especially of women doing so is due to an increase in situations where men and women work in close proximity of each other. As more and more women are going out to work more men and women are thrown together.

The changing social values also allow a woman to be with a man other than her spouse without raising an eyebrow. Also, earlier men had more opportunities to hide an affair from the wife who rarely had means of discovering the indiscretion. Now with the internet, mobile phones and so on it is possible for a woman to be as discreet.

A new awareness and freedom and social emancipation of women encourages them to consider their own wishes and desires at par with those of their spouse or family. Earlier, women used to cull their desires and ambitions for the sake of the family. This is no longer the case and they do not feel guilty about catering to their own wishes first.

There is a basic difference though in the reasons men and women have for having extra marital affairs though the separating lines occasionally overlap. Men stray from a relationship for physical reasons, while women tend to do the same for emotional reasons. As a result, men take greater offence if their women have a physical involvement and women object to emotional involvements.

All said and done there are no strict parameters of reasons due to which women cheat on their partners. There are some general recurring headings though under which they can be grouped:

1. Taken For Granted: As the couple settles into marriage, men tend to get busy with their work and romance takes a sharp dip in their list of priorities. A woman who is used to being chased, pampered and indulged feels more like a household drudge, taken for granted. She seeks intimacy, emotional satisfaction and attention which are in short supply from the husband. This makes a woman look for it elsewhere.

2. Lack of Communication: Women need to be communicated to, physically and verbally. They need to connect with their men on an emotional level before getting physical. It is just the opposite for men and hence women often feel unloved and used by their partners. They need a constant reassurance of their partner’s feelings for them. In absence of that they fall for any attention paid to them by another man.

3. Leading Parallel Lives: Most men, after some to time in the marriage want to get back to their individual interests and hobbies. They want to watch football instead of talking to their wives; they want to go out with their beer buddies instead of having a quiet dinner with the family. As the partners start doing their own things they loose touch and the emotional bond which is so important for the women weakens. This often leaves her in emotionally vulnerable.

4. Breaking of Illusions: Women often fall in love with illusions and fantasies they conjure up about the man of their dreams. They get married with their mind and heart filled up with these unreal but romantic notions about their prince charming. Life after marriage turns out to be a real eye opener and all their illusions shatter. They however do not learn from the experience and set out in the hope of finding the “real’ prince charming.

5. Ego Boost: There might be no other reason other than a simple ego boost or an affirmation that they are still desirable that can make a woman go for the forbidden fruit. The thrill of being chased entices them into infidelity.

6. As a Revenge: “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” goes a saying. A woman might cheat as a way of getting back at a cheating husband or as a means to lessen their own hurt due to the husband’s betrayal.

As is commonly believed, women cheat mainly because they no longer feel connected to their men. Men are less eager or able to forgive a wife’s infidelity and most marriages where a wife cheats end up in divorce. Serious trust issues crop up after a wife’s indiscretion becomes known.

Also, many women get into an extra marital affair with a ‘no stings attached relationship’ in mind. They soon find themselves getting emotionally involved with the other man. For this reason too, they do not want to get back to their husbands and their marriages end.
