Married couples share an intimacy unmatched by any other association. Spouses are physically, emotionally, spiritually, financially, intellectually and physically close together.

Marriages are also required for the procreation of children and the continuation of society. Children nurtured in families, where both the parents stay married and form a family unit, emerge as refined individuals. In the absence of such favourable atmosphere, one could well expect the law of jungle to prevail all over.

Marital union fosters family ties and family is the basic unit of society. This explains the necessity of legal intervention in marital affairs, which are otherwise strictly personal.

Legal and Social Aspects of Marriage

In primitive societies, marriage was a personal bond that was socially celebrated. With the growth of civilisation, the importance of marital unions gained increased recognition. Governmental laws were enforced to ensure sanctity and continuity of the relationship. For example, in many countries across the globe, marriages between father and daughter, mother and son, aunt and nephew, grandfather and granddaughter are legally not permissible. Marital unions are governed by laws and even breaking of such a union is possible only if the courts permit.

State interventions in marriages highlight the importance of this institution. Marriage has many other facets. One such aspect is the sacred aura around it and wedding vows are (usually) taken in places of worship. This commitment that enjoys religious sanctity is celebrated after both the partners profess their love for one another and make a public commitment to remain intimately united for life.

Intimacy in Marriage

The intimacy shared by married couples develops over many years of leading a life together. Spouses, who share religious intimacy, go to church together. Financial intimacy lies in planning together, for an economically secure future. Recreational intimacy develops by partying together, enjoying movies or going out for picnics. Another form of intimacy that is important for the relationship to thrive is intellectual intimacy. However, not all marital partners complement each other intellectually.

Intimately attached partners enjoy life more, for they benefit out of the many advantages that closeness entails. They enjoy better physical and emotional health. They develop trust and acceptance and turn caring and interdependent. Such emotionally attached spouses undoubtedly share physical proximity too, which is an integral part of wedded life. However, physical intimacy occurs only when marital mates are close in all other aspects of life. Usually, couples who share such an affectionate bond turn good parents to their children.

Good Parenting

All these dimensions of marriage have their undue influence on children. To expatiate, when spouses form a loving bond, this qualitatively improves their marriage. Children, who view the prevalence of affection at home, learn to form loving relationship themselves. Closely bonded couples prove to be pillars of strength to one another in times of need. By viewing those, children learn the valuable lesson that all problems can be solved co-operatively.

Unfortunately, some people misinterpret development of intimacy in marriage. They come to believe that intimacy means subjecting their spouse to the same views of pessimism, self-doubt, and anger they subject themselves to. They also live with the mistaken notion that being polite to the spouse is akin to being cold and distant. Such people would do well to realise that they can rid themselves of the emotional load they are carrying, if they treat their spouses civilly.

Intimacy Has Made Marriages Popular Down the Centuries

People like commitment. The promise to live together in troubled and happy times ensures security which is much needed for a happy life. The security and comfort of married life makes it an ideal atmosphere to raise and nurture children.

This bliss and comfort brought by closeness has made marriages popular among all sections of people in societies around the globe. Marriages have been prevalent in society since written history. Based on demographic conditions, marriages used to either tilt towards polygamy or polyandry. However, by and large, marital unions remained monogamous in nature. Intimacy flourishes most in a unification that comprises of two people.
