The reasons are many and varied and not every reason, justifies divorce. Discussing some reasons might throw some light on the phenomenon of divorce.

Divorce Due to Extramarital Affairs

When two people get married, they make certain commitments to each other. Fidelity is one of the main things they promise each other. Unfortunately, it is one of the main reasons why marriages fall apart. From one night stands to full-fledged affairs, one or both partners giving into temptation, creates a crack in the marriage.

It is not as if people from the days of yore never indulged in affairs. However, they usually were more discreet and it rarely came to light. Further, women used to be financially dependent on men and even if they were aware of their husband cheating on them, they ignored it. The modern woman feels no need to put up with infidelity and expects an equal commitment from her husband. Anything short of complete faithfulness, divorce papers are filed.

With women pursuing careers, they too have equal opportunity to meet and hang out with members of the opposite sex. There are increasing incidents of women having affairs at their work place. Very rarely, does a man’s ego allow him to forgive the woman’s indiscretion. Divorce, therefore, becomes inevitable.

Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is a shocking reality that many women face. During the courting period, a man is able to hide his abusive nature. Sometimes, even if a woman sees the signs before marriage, she thinks things will change after marriage. However, an abusive nature is a deeply ingrained evil. It is probably baggage from childhood, deep insecurity or arising from a drinking habit. Whatever leads to the abuse, it is another factor that results in divorce.

Abusive men very rarely like to admit their nature. Therefore, they may not agree to seek help through counselling. If a man does not show signs of improving, women are far more empowered today and will not suffer.

Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse can actually be harder to withstand than physical abuse. It usually arises out of the controlling nature of a partner or insecurity. Slowly but surely, the emotional abuser will strip away the confidence of a partner. The partner at the receiving end is made to feel utterly useless, unattractive and robbed of self-esteem.

This constant nagging and emotional abuse can be unbearable. Just like physical abusers, emotional abusers, too, need professional help. Since both partners have active careers, sometimes a sense of competition and one-upmanship can lead to emotional abuse. Sooner or later, divorce becomes the only solution to get away from the terrible situation.

Incompatible Personalities

While opposites attract, it is very difficult with two extremely different personalities to live together. While one doesn’t want to be two peas in a pod, one expects to have common points of understanding with a partner. Oftentimes, a couple find themselves in conflict about every single aspect of their life together.

From opinions on what kind of home to live in, to religious conflict, to differing notions on how to bring up children and even unequal sex drives can drive a wedge between two people. Since life is short, people do not want to share it with someone they are completely incompatible with. Hoping to have second chance with someone more compatible, a couple may choose to divorce.

Infertility

While people may be deeply in love when they get married, they may not foresee problems that might crop up. Infertility is a problem that a couple may not reckon for. The need to have children might be so strongly felt by one partner that the other partner’s infertility might be sufficient reason for divorce. It is definitely a big issue between some couples and can drive them apart. Even family pressure when one partner is infertile can cause a couple to get divorced.

Conclusion

While the reasons above are some of the contributing factors leading to divorce, they are not all. Individualistic lifestyles, demanding careers, late marriage are also reasons that could drive a couple apart. Further, the general acceptance of divorce and the removal of any social stigma attached have helped it make divorce easier.
