One of the largest Greek Islands which is also one of the largest Ionian Islands is Kefalonia found on the west side of the Greek mainland . An unknown fact is that Kefalonia can be spelt in various ways and some of these ways include Cephallonia, Kefallonia and Cephalonia. The island itself is said to be named after Cephalus, who was a person from Greek Mythology and was the son of Hermes and Herse.
Kefalonia is an island with mountain ranges, deep caves and vegetation. It is also immersed in history. All the Ionian Islands which included Kefalonia were united back with Greece in 1864 after spending hundreds of years being passed from diverse leaderships such as Roman ruling and Norman ruling.
1953 for any inhabitant of the island will be remembered as a time when a progression of disastrous earthquakes hit the island, one of them hitting a colossal 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake ruined a great amount of buildings and resulted in millions of pounds in damages, and a vast majority of people who lived on the island left soon after to nearby islands to start a new life. Kefalonia itself was raised 60cm above its original level and this can still be evidenced on the coastline where you can see water marks on the rocks around the island.
Kefalonia attracts countless tourists from across the world made up mainly of English and Italian holidaymakers and this has been improved since the release of a film that was filmed on the island of Kefalonia in 2001.
Lassi is arguably the most popular resort on the island with its lively atmosphere that is ideal for all kinds of holidaymakers. Along the wide sweeping bays and sea fronts you will find bars and tavernas so you won’t get bored. In the day time there are water sports, sweeping sandy beaches, and quiet sheltered coves for you to spend your relaxing holiday at.
Lassi consists of the most eye catching beaches on the island. With unusual rocky cliffs and striking bays Kefalonia is a great place for those who want scenery and relaxation on their holidays . If you are engrossed in exploring Kefalonia, there are many boat trips and cruises that can take you to significant hotspots and places of interest. So whether you want check out the rock formations, sunbath out in the open sea or anchor up on a secluded beach you can hire your own motor boat for the day to do just that.
