1. Food plays a large part in the life of a Spaniard, so when it comes to eating out, tapas is one of these essential meals you need to understand when visiting Spain. It’s not about how much you eat but rather what you eat; the idea being that you have a small piece of food with every drink. Don’t be frightened to learn Spanish whilst you’re there - the Spanish will love you for it.
* Lots of drink, lots of bars and lots of great food.
2. The Bullfights
The Spanish bullfights are not to everyone’s taste, but I feel they need to be included in the list due to the vital role they play in the Spanish culture. Without the bullfights, the Spanish “Jamon” would not be as widely available, and thus could affect the economy due to the amount they export. Although some bullfights seem brutal, the ones with the experienced matadors are more of an art form.
3. Architecture of Antoní Gaudí
One of the most famous architects in the world, need I say more! Although not everyone agrees the buildings he created or changed where beautiful, they all seem to agree that everyone should see them.
4. Alhambra
For those that don’t know the history here is an overview: The Alhambra Moorish Fortress protected the people from an invasion from the Christians for a few hundred years. The beauty of the fortress and gardens is probably ten times what you can imagine to see in your native country, as the Spanish sun brings out all the flowers into bloom nice and early.
5. Flamenco
As music goes, Flamenco is as unique as it comes. You can still hear it throughout much of Spain, whether it be in a restaurant with band or from the bars on the seafront. It is even popular with the youths - you can here Flamenco being played from their car stereos.
6. Essential Museums
When it comes to museums, Madrid is the place to be. There are three must see museums in Madrid and they are as follows:
• Centro de Arte Reina Sofia
• Museo del Prado
• Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
7. Go to Segovia
Not just anywhere in Segovia, but the main sights. Most cities claim to have one main attraction whilst Segovia can claim to have two.
Number 1: Segovia 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct.
Number two: Alcazar
8. Paella
You can sample Paella throughout most of Spain, yet to indulge in the best of what
Spain has to offer, you need to visit Valencia. Although recently many restaurants
know this, and offer what they claim to be is the best “Paella Valenciana”, the best
thing you can do is get to know some locals and ask for their opinion.
9. Seville and its city
Seville is one of the most beautiful cities throughout Spain, it has so much to offer and
is truly captivating. The Plaza de España is one of the many places you should visit. Avoid
travelling during August though due to the sweltering heat.
10. The north
Many people talk about the South of Spain and how beautiful it is, but sometimes
forget to visit the north. The green lands are like nothing you have ever seen before.
