Everyone knows someone who has had a bad experience with food on holiday and resulted in some form of food poisoning, no matter how serious. There are certain ways in which you can enjoy the local culinary delights without suffering any after-effects that might come about due to an unfamiliar taste or ingredient. Here are some hints to take note of when travelling abroad so that you don’t come home with lots of holiday complaints about your trip:

• Try to eat regularly, even if you don’t feel like it. In hot temperatures, you may feel less like eating than you would at home, but you should try to eat at every meal time and keep up a regular diet. Keep up your strength by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, and if you don’t feel like you will be getting your full intake of nutrients, it might be useful to bring your own vitamin supplements from home.
• Ensure you have a good supply of safe drinking water. One of the biggest causes of holiday illness is through drinking contaminated water so you must make sure that the water is clean and safe to drink, or that you have a supply of bottled water to use. You should also be wary of the use of ice in drinks, especially in local bars. Many of the locals will have become accustomed to the water in their country and even though it might not be contaminated, it may have a different mineral composition that our stomachs are unused to. Boiling water, or using filters, will also remove most of the added minerals and should make it safe to drink, so do this if there is no bottled water available.
• Avoid potentially unsafe foods. Try to avoid raw fruit and vegetables as these might not have been prepared properly unlike they are in the UK. When ordering meat, it might be worth having it well-done or at the very least medium-well because food tends to be slightly under-cooked abroad. You should try to avoid seafood, as this is generally cooked at a low temperature, meaning that a lot of harmful bacteria are not killed off. Some dairy products can be unsafe, especially unpasteurized ones, so beware of putting milk in your hot drinks.
• When eating out, avoid street food vendors as these won’t be very reputable and the food can be unsafe. If you decide to buy food from a street vendor, ensure that it is thoroughly cooked and is hot all the way through. Try to choose a restaurant that appears busy or that you have heard good reviews about, rather than one that is quiet, as this is a sign of bad food or an unsafe setting.
